Payment happens when you send your event. If a payment doesn't go through, or you close the checkout partway, nothing is lost and nothing embarrassing happens on your guests' end. Here's exactly what's going on and how to finish.
Symptoms
- Your card was declined at checkout.
- You closed the payment window before finishing.
- You started to send but the invitations never went out.
- You received an email saying a payment didn't go through, or a reminder to finish sending.
What actually happens
- Nothing is charged on a failed or abandoned payment.
- Nothing is sent to your guests. Invitations only go out once the payment succeeds, so a failed attempt is completely invisible to everyone you invited — no half-sent batch, no duplicate later.
- Your event stays exactly where you left it — your design, guest list, and settings are untouched, ready to try again whenever you are.
Because the charge and the send happen together, there's no state where you've paid but your guests got nothing by accident. If a payment ever does succeed without the send completing, InviteBird's own safety net reconciles it for you automatically (more on that below).
Most likely causes
- The card was declined by the bank, or had insufficient funds.
- A card detail — number, expiry, or security code — was entered incorrectly.
- The checkout window was closed before the payment completed.
- A bank's fraud check paused an unfamiliar online charge (common on a first purchase).
Resolution steps
- Check your email. If a payment was declined, we send a short message with a one-tap link that reopens the same order — no need to set anything up again. If you stepped away mid-checkout, you'll get a friendly reminder with a link back to the send step.
- Try again from your dashboard. Open the event and start the send again. Your list and design are as you left them.
- Use a different card. A different card is the single most common fix for a decline. You can also re-check the card number, expiry date, and security code.
- Confirm it went through. After a successful payment, your invitations send and each guest's status appears on the Guests tab. You'll also get a receipt email with a PDF invoice — see Payments, receipts, and refunds.
About that unfinished order
An unfinished order eventually expires on its own if it's never completed — this only clears the abandoned attempt and never affects your event. You can always start a fresh send whenever you're ready; you don't need to clean anything up first.
And if a charge ever did succeed but the send didn't complete (say, your connection dropped at the worst moment), a background safety net checks for paid-but-unsent orders and completes them automatically, so a genuine payment is never quietly lost.
If the issue continues
If a card keeps being declined after you've confirmed the details, the quickest path is to check with your bank — they can often approve the charge once they know it's you — or try another card. If you believe you were charged but your event didn't send, don't send again; contact us at info@invitebird.com and we'll reconcile it for you.
Common questions
My card was declined but my bank shows a pending charge — was I charged twice? A decline may leave a temporary authorization hold that your bank clears on its own; it isn't a completed charge. If you then pay successfully with another card, only the successful one settles. If anything looks off, contact us with the details.
I closed the checkout by accident. Did my guests get a half-finished invite? No. Nothing sends until payment completes, so closing checkout sends nothing at all. Just reopen the event and start the send again.
Where's the retry link? In the email we send when a payment is declined — it reopens the exact same order in one tap. If you can't find it, you can simply start the send again from your dashboard.
I think I paid but the invitations never went out. This is rare because the two happen together, and a safety net auto-completes paid orders. Don't re-send — contact us at info@invitebird.com with your event and we'll confirm and fix it.
Does a failed payment use up my plan or lock my event? No. A failed or abandoned attempt changes nothing about your plan or event. Your guest list, design, and settings stay exactly as they were.
