The invitation editor saves as you go, so you rarely need to think about it. If you're worried a change didn't stick, the save indicator tells you exactly where things stand, and there's a manual save you can trigger any time. Here's how it works and what to do when a save doesn't go through.

How saving works

  • Autosave. Moments after you make a change, the editor saves it automatically — there's no "you must click Save" step.
  • Manual save. You can also save on demand with the Save button, or by pressing Ctrl+S (Cmd+S on a Mac). A successful manual save shows the message "Invitation saved."
  • Your work reloads where you left it. Reopen the editor later and your latest saved design and details are right there.

Reading the save indicator

Watch the small status near the top of the editor:

  • Saved — everything's safely stored. You're done.
  • Saving… — a save is in flight; give it a moment.
  • Unsaved changes — you've edited something that hasn't saved yet (this normally clears to "Saving…" then "Saved" within a second or two).
  • Save failed (or Retry on mobile) — the last save didn't get through. Your changes aren't thrown away — the editor holds them and keeps trying.

Why a save might fail — and what to do

A shaky connection. Most failed saves are a brief network drop. You'll see Save failed and a message like "Save failed. Your changes are still queued." Your edits are safe; when the connection returns, the queued changes save. To nudge it, press Save (or Ctrl/Cmd+S) once you're back online.

Your sign-in went stale. If you've left the editor open and idle for a long time, your session can lapse in that tab, and saves may quietly stop landing. If edits don't seem to be sticking, reload the page; if you're asked to sign in, do so, then check your most recent changes are present before carrying on. Reopening the editor fresh re-establishes the connection.

The event is locked. You can't edit an event that's been canceled or has already taken place — those are read-only by design. An attempted edit reports "This invitation is canceled and can no longer be edited." or "This event has already taken place and can no longer be edited." See After your event: keepsake mode.

Make sure your work is saved

  1. Glance at the indicator. "Saved" means you're safe to leave.
  2. If it says "Saving…", wait a beat — it'll settle to "Saved."
  3. If it lingers on "Unsaved changes" or shows "Save failed," check your internet, then press Save to force it. Watch for "Invitation saved."
  4. Don't close the tab while it's still saving. If you try, your browser warns you with a "Leave site?" prompt — stay until it reads Saved.
  5. Been away a while? Refresh, sign in again if prompted, and confirm your latest edits are there.

Reassuringly, the editor also keeps a few recent restore points of your design, so a materially different version can be brought back from the editor if you ever need to step back.

If the issue continues

If saves keep failing on a solid connection, and the event isn't canceled or past, try a different browser or an incognito/private window (a browser extension can occasionally interfere). If it still won't save, email us at info@invitebird.com with your event so we can investigate — and note whether the indicator shows "Save failed."

Common questions

Do I have to click Save, or does it save automatically? It saves automatically as you edit. The Save button and Ctrl/Cmd+S are there for peace of mind when you want to force it.

I refreshed and some changes were gone — why? Anything that reached "Saved" is kept. Changes lost on refresh were ones that hadn't saved yet — often because the connection dropped or the session went stale. Watch for "Saved" before closing, and if in doubt, press Save first.

It says "Save failed." Did I lose my work? No. That message comes with "Your changes are still queued" — the editor keeps them and retries. Reconnect and press Save.

Why can't I edit my event at all? If it's been canceled or the date has passed, the event is locked and read-only. That's expected — see After your event: keepsake mode.

I'm sharing editing with a co-host — can that cause save issues? Co-hosts can edit too. To avoid stepping on each other, it's best not to edit the exact same design at the same moment; save and let the other person reload to pick up your changes.
