When should you send sweet 16 invitations?

Send sweet 16 invitations two to six weeks ahead: nearer two for a sleepover or a backyard night, nearer six for a booked venue or a dress code.

Check the school calendar before you pick the date. Exam weeks, finals and big game nights can empty half the guest list.

What should a sweet 16 invitation include?

Parents read sweet 16 invitations as closely as teens do. Make sure yours covers:

  • the start time and the pickup or end time
  • a parent's name and phone number
  • the theme and what to wear
  • whether it's a sleepover, and what to bring
  • "just you" unless plus-ones are welcome

Example lines to adapt:

  • Big party: "Skates on for Rina's sweet 16! Starlight Roller Rink, Saturday 6 to 9:30 p.m. Skate rental is covered."
  • Sleepover: "Sleepover for Sofia's 16th, Friday 6 p.m. to Saturday 10 a.m. Bring a sleeping bag and your comfiest pajamas."
  • Outing: "Mini-golf, then tacos, for Elena's 16th. Drop-off at 2 p.m., pickup at 5:30."

What InviteBird builds in for a sweet 16

Sixteen uses the Teens (13–17) games: Guess the birthday star, Who knows the birthday star best, Wishes & memories and a prize drawing for everyone who says yes. A gift hints card on the invitation can list sizes, favorites and current obsessions.

A parent owns the event and pays, and the teen can join as a co-host (accounts are for ages 13 and up). Add a password for invited guests only, and set a headcount limit with a waitlist.

Questions about sweet 16 invitations

Can I stop a sweet 16 invitation from being shared around?

You can limit it, not lock it. A password keeps out people without the code, but a code can be passed on. Turn on "Only guests on my list can RSVP" too, so people who aren't on the list can't reply.

How many people should we invite to a sweet 16?

There's no right number. Start from the space, the budget and how many adults will be there, then let the teen fill the list to that size. Use the same number as your headcount limit; once it fills, anyone else who opens the invitation can leave their name on the waitlist.

What's the difference between a sweet 16 and a quinceañera invitation?

A quinceañera marks a girl's 15th birthday, a tradition in many Hispanic families in Latin America and the U.S. It often begins with a Mass or another religious service, so its invitation usually gives the service and the reception separately. A sweet 16 has no set format, so the invitation can be as formal or as casual as the party.

Wondering how to organize the party itself? Our sweet 16 ideas guide covers themes, outings, sleepovers and food. For more teen designs, browse teen birthday invitations.
